Skirmish has many options and map types and is as close as RW:RS comes to a random map game. Your starting position is randomized but no other features on a particular map are. The campaigns are linear and linked, one for each side, good for one, maybe two, plays through.
Multiplayer works well. The GameSpy Arcade web site provides an area for this title. If you venture there be sure you've played the skirmish maps a few times and know where the neutral supply sources are. In Rogue States, the player has fourteen missions for single player mode, and new multiplayer options, thanks to which two players can command the same troops at the same time - one of them controls ground units and the other controls air troops.
Twenty new maps are also available. The plot of the game allows you to give very specific and specific commands to individual units, e. The player can also give orders to units before they enter the battlefield, thus eliminating unwanted and unnecessary waiting for commands issued in the base.

Know how to use Task Forces? Master this too!! Select forces to group first. One way to build an air strike force fast is to select one Helicopter then press the Insert key. That will allow all units of that type visible on the screen to be picked at once. Then Press Ctrl, Shift and a number key, say 3 for example, all at the same time. Every time 3 is pressed the Helicopter Task Force will be selected to attack or defend with. When attacking, hold the shift key down to select successive targets.
This is good when using Navy seals to sabotage the enemy fleet, or when attacking by air. Putting rocket infantry into bunkers helps to repel enemy tanks and ground troops. Groups of three rocket infantry can target and bring down enemy aircraft. Use your sub hunter to drop sonar around your naval base, to detect enemy submarines before they attack. This allows you to counter-attack them by dropping sonar guided topedos from the sub hunter. Bases or critical units weakened by attack? Hover cursor over the base or unit, select the K key to kill the base or unit yourself.
Then rebuild it in a more protected area. Rally points, red ovals were new units appear, can be moved to any visible part of the map. For example, click on Sea Base. Rally point will appear. Hold down shift key and use cursor to drag red oval to new location at sea. Watch your back door or some SOB will build a second base or land a invasion force behind you. Use multiple task fouces quickly from different directions.
Mass all together slowly in unprotected forward area and you are a target for a nuke. Rouge States is the 2nd generation game and my favorite. It came out 3 years after the original game Real War, bugs were fixed. No patches are required. This is separate game, not a patch or MOD.
There are also some inexplicable restrictions to the number of buildings and units you can create; for example, on most missions you're restricted to around seven artillery units.
Now, the thinking behind this is obvious: it's there to avoid the traditional RTS tank rush, prevent the player from finding an uber-unit and using that to dominate the enemy. The problem is, it's somewhat inelegant to impose an arbitrary limit in this manner. Resource gathering is also quite strange. Goods are flown in automatically and at regular intervals by helicopters, which you need to protect from enemy fire. The only effective difference is that apart from the very occasional independent supply station, there are no resources to fight over, which is actually a bad thing because it's usually a major strategic issue in any good RTS.
Another criticism concerns the pathfinding. While it was competent in most situations, there were times when unit needed nudging after getting stuck behind a tree or something. Unit AI is much worse, however. More often than not you're lucky if they ever actually fire on an enemy unit without you telling them to. Your base can be under attack by 17 gazillion enemy units and your guys won't budge an inch. They don't seem to use tactics of any sort, they don't choose the correct unit to attack your troops seem to love attacking enemy tanks but only for the short time before they get squashed and artillery will take out half your base if you're not micromanaging the task of keeping them away.
To make things seem difficult, on just about every mission you'll be rushed by the enemy fairly early on. This has its good points in that it keeps you on your toes and means you can't just dawdle around.
Its bad points are that once you've got through the first two attack waves, you'll only face the odd troop or two thrown your way when the bad guys can be bothered. It's a rare occasion, but I honestly can't recommend Real War to anyone. It's a distasteful, ugly, boring and vastly unoriginal RTS. If you want something realistic and modern, WW3: Black Gold presents a much better option. Screenshots from MobyGames. Antonio terrero -1 point.
